| Cabinet defers decision on land requisition issue | | | Early Times Report Jammu, August 30--The state cabinet, which met in Srinagar yesterday, has deferred its decision on the issue connected with the procedure related to requisition of land by various Government and private agencies. Reports had reached the Government that these agencies, including the Army and the paramilitary forces, made a requisition for land for construction of barracks and unit offices and there was no time limit for retaining the land that had been requisitioned. The Cabinet wanted to put a limit of 10 years. Informed official sources today revealed that the cabinet wanted that those agencies which had made the requisition for land had to vacate it after 10 years or seek fresh permission. The sources made it clear that there was a difference between acquisition and requisition and added that for acquisition there was no time limit to be imposed because the acquisition had been made with the consent of the Government or the private parties and in such cases required compensation was paid. The cabinet wanted to free those chunks of land that had been under various agencies, including security forces, for the last over three decades. Informed sources said that the cabinet deferred the decision because the members were of the opinion that since the issue was highly sensitive and important it needed detailed discussion .Indications are that the cabinet, during its next meeting, may set up a committee of experts to study the issue and submit a report to the cabinet or a cabinet subcommittee may be set up for examining the matter.
