CUAS threatens to intensify agitation
Munish Gupta8/30/2009 10:29:26 PM

Jammu, Aug 30: Peeved over the reported move of Union Ministry of Human Resource Development putting Central University of Jammu and Kashmir on hold for a year, the conglomerate Jammu based organizations spearheading agitation has warned of a sustained agitation if campus was not established in Jammu.
“If a Central University stands sanctioned for Jammu and Indian Institute of Management for Kashmir then what is all this fuss about”, questioned Advocate Sunil Sethi, the spokesman of Central University Andolan Samiti and president of Jammu Bar Association. He told reporters that the CUAS is geared for a sustained agitation, “more aggressive than last year’s Amarnath land row stir” if a timely decision was not taken on establishment of the University in Jammu.
Taking a dig at Jammu based leaders in the government, Spokesman CUAS and Bar Association President Sunil Sethi stated that "Ministers at Jammu press conference said that they will set up the CU in Jammu but later they changed their statement. The statements given by the Ministers were conflicting and did not corroborate with each other, he alleged.
As per statement, Bhalla said that Central University will be set up at Jammu at any cost, while another Minister RS Chib had said that he stood by whatever he stated at Jammu during a press conference. In his statement he had also clarified that no site had been demarcated at Samba for establishment of CU and said that three sites in Jammu and four in the valley have been identified in the state while the final decision would be taken by Centre. Another senior NC leader and Minister Surjeet Singh Salathia had said that CUs will be opened both at Jammu and Kashmir regions
Sethi said because of negligence of the Government, it is the students who are suffering. ''The Government is depriving people of the benefit they could have achieved with establishment of institution like CU,'' he said. All educational institutions in Jammu are closed for the past two months as students are agitating on the CU issue, he said adding that people of Jammu want a categorical statement from the Government that CU would be set up in the region.
“Centre- State are working in league over the Central University issue and alleged that the Centre was giving an escape root to the state on CU issue”.
Sethi on the occasion informed that on September 6, CUAS will convene a meeting with all the legislatures of Jammu province over Central University issue to take them into confidence for massive support. He said that legislators must know one thing that Central University has been sanctioned for Jammu and it should be established in Jammu itself.
He further informed that a team of CUAS will visit New-Delhi to meet Central Ministers, leaders and others which will be followed by batch wise relay hunger strike in entire Jammu province in order to intensify the ongoing movement.
Commenting over the decision of HRD Ministry to put off CU project in Jammu by one year, Sethi said, “It’s an example of discrimination with Jammu as Centre has put off CU project in Jammu while continuing IIM project in Kashmir valley”.
“If the Government thinks the issue may die down with the passage of time, they are living in fool paradise”, he said, adding, ‘Government should have to come out and resolve the issue before people come out on streets.
“At present Government is not serious over the matter which forced the CUAS to intensify movement and if government continues with its non-seriousness attitude over CU issue, CUAS would be forced to adopt tough posture”, he said, adding, ‘students were on roads, regular classes are affected but this Government is yet to wake up from deep slumber’.
“Government should act fast and establish Central University in full-fledged manner before situation goes out control,” the spokesperson said.
He called upon the students of Jammu to play major and active role to get Central University.
While commenting over CUAS program, he said that Samiti’s enrollment drive continues in Jammu and so far CUAS enrolled 70000 youth and drive will continue till target of two lakh enrolment is achieved.
