Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 31: The State High Court today told the Special Investigation Team in clear terms to come up with a reply in next four days on how long it would take to complete inquiry into Shopian’s twin rape and murder case.
Hearing the bail applications of two police officers-- then Superintendent of Police (SP), Shopian, Javid Iqbal Matoo and his deputy Rohit Baskotra, a single bench comprising Justice Sunil Hali directed the SIT to report back within four days when it would complete the probe.
The officers had filed a criminal revision petition before the High Court after their bail applications were rejected by Sessions court, Shopian. Counsel for the accused had pleaded before the court during last hearing that since there was no material evidence against both police officers, they should be released on bail.
He informed the court that there was no evidence which suggest their direct or indirect involvement in the crime.
Counsel for the state government, however, opposed the bail and said that despite violence marks on the bodies of two women Neelofar and Asiya, the police officers failed to register an FIR. He said the FIR was registered after six days of delay during which period vital evidence in the case had been destroyed.
One-man commission of inquiry headed Justice (retd) Muzaffar Jan, appointed to probe the rape and murder, in its report said involvement of a state police agency could not be ruled out completely.Later, Matoo and Rohit were arrested along with two other police officers on the direction of the High Court.
The SIT had announced rupees 20 lakh reward for any one who would provide any clue leading to arrest of the culprits.
The state government had moved an application before the division bench seeking permission to hand over the case to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court has fixed September 30 as next date for hearing the case.
