Congress Ministers firm on CU in Jammu
9/1/2009 10:16:08 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 01- Congress leaders, including ministers, hailing from the Jammu region are of the firm opinion that land for the proposed Central University "can be available only in Jammu”. Wishing to remain unidentified these Congress leaders today stated that the issue pertaining to the setting up of Central University was to be cleared during a cabinet meeting in 2008 but no formal discussion was held because the issue had not been kept on the agenda.
These leaders said that about 5,000 kanals of Government land was available in Samba and had the Government decided to set up the proposed Central University in Jammu it could have been easily set up in Samba where the Government had not to invest money on acquiring private land. They suspected that the Valley centric political leaders were playing "political intrigue" by denying the Jammu belt the right to have the University. They said that when the IIM was to be set up in Kashmir why not the state Government should establish the Central University in Jammu which could reduce the level of regional discrimination.
One minister said that while the IIM required not more than 1100 kanals of land for building the infrastructure, the Central University required over 5,000 kanals which were not available in the Kashmir valley. He said that under rules the Government could not either acquire Custodian land for the University nor could it acquire Forest land and since over 80 per cent of the area in Kashmir was agricultural land possibilities of acquiring 5000 kanals of land in the valley were remote. The minister said that reports indicated that the centre was not in a mood to sanction two Central Universities for Jammu and Kashmir and the ruling National Conference leaders were simply misleading people in the Jammu region by telling that the Government was trying to secure two universities for the state.
Another senior leader said that had the state cabinet cleared the project for the Jammu region in 2008 there would have been no political commotion but the state Government preferred dither to appease the vote bank in Kashmir. He said that "whatever may be the consequences we will not allow Jammu region to lose the right of having one Central University
