Police personnel prefer to be in security wing
9/2/2009 10:03:07 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 2- Field reports have revealed that the police personnel prefer to be posted in the security wing. It is the result of this desire and growing demand for security cover from political activists that nearly one-third of Armed Police force is deployed on providing security to VIPs, important persons (IP) bureaucrats, serving and retired and political leaders.
These reports said that senior police authorities carried out a review of the security requirement and whenever a decision was taken to reduce the security cover provided to political leaders it is greeted with hue and cry. These political activists complain to the Chief Minister and other ministers with the result police authorities are forced to keep their decision in abeyance.
A senior police officer today said that a number of policemen, who had been transferred from the security wing to their parent Armed police battalions, have not joined their duties for the last several months. They have not come to the Department for drawing their monthly salary because they know that they will get their salary only when they join the Armed Police battalions. The officer said that over the years those police official, who are on duty providing security to political leaders and bureaucrats, have developed vested interest. When on security duty they have not to attend the morning parades and face militants and agitators. They have also found that by guarding political leaders, especially those in power, they become influential to the extent they manage to get some of the problems of their kin and friends settled.
The officer said that despite the fact that most of the political leaders have been provided with security cover the demand for PSOs continues to swell. This has affected the functioning in the police.
