5 ultras dead in Gurez as second infiltration bid foiled in 48 hours

Jammu, Aug 2: Close on the heels of a top Army commander expressing concern over possible infiltration of atleast 50 militants waiting on the other side of Line of Control, the troopers today gunned five ultra in North Kashmir foiling a major infiltration bid.
Meanwhile, in another militancy related incident a jawan and Special Police Official of the Jammu and Kashmir Police were killed in an encounter with militants in Bharote area of Thannamandi in Rajouri district. A heavily armed posse of militants opened fire on the challenging Army and Police party in which two cops were killed, sources told Early Times.
Reports reaching here from Srinagar said that five guerrillas attempting to cross over from Pakistani side were killed early Wednesday when Indian Army soldiers foiled their infiltration bid in Gurez sector. A group of infiltrators were spotted by the alert soldiers guarding the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez sector of north Kashmir's Bandipore district. "The group of terrorists was challenged upon which they opened fire at the surrounding troops. In the heavy exchange of fire, five terrorists have so far been gunned down," defence spokesperson Col Uma Maheshwar said. "The operation is still on and firing exchanges are continuing."
In another exchange of bullets between security personnel and militants in Baramulla district, a special police officer (SPO) was killed and a trooper wounded on Tuesday afternoon. Police said security forces had surrounded a forest area on specific information about the presence of a group of militants. The hiding militants opened fire at the security forces killing an SPO on the spot and wounding a trooper.
Reports reaching here from Srinagar said that five militants were killed in an encounter in the north Kashmir area of Bandipore district early on Wednesday, when the army foiled a major infiltration bid into the Indian side of the Line of Control.
A defence spokesman in Srinagar said a group of heavily armed terrorists were intercepted by the army near the LoC triggering an encounter in which five terrorists have been killed so far.
"The encounter in the area is still on. So far five terrorists have been killed by the army after the troops spotted a group of infiltrators trying to sneak into our side of the LoC," the spokesman said.
On Tuesday, a special police officer had been killed and a trooper wounded in another gunfight in the Sheikhpora forest area of north Kashmir Baramulla district. Police sources said troops of Rashtriya Rifles and the police had jointly surrounded the forest area following information that a group of terrorists was hiding inside.
The incident of infiltration bid via Line of Control is second in less than 48 hours. On Tuesday an Army soldier was killed in Poonch district when Pakistani troops fired from across the Line of Control (LoC). In what was termed as 'another case of ceasefire violation', a senior army official said the firing came from across the LoC.
'It was unprovoked firing in which one soldier got killed,' he said, adding that the Indian side did not retaliate and the matter would be taken up with Pakistani authorities.
The soldier has been identified as Lance Naik Dag Bahadur Gurung.
It may be mentioned here that only on Tuesday a top Army Commander had said that over 50 ultras may waiting to cross over the Line of Control. “Pakistan is building fortifications along the border and more than 50 militants are waiting to infiltrate into Jammu sector from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, General Officer Commanding of 9 Corps Lt. Gen. E M Nair had told the reporters on Tuesday.
"They (Pakistan) have dug up bunkers and ditches and set up a few observation towers along Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab borders," he has said and added that nearly 50 to 60 militants from PoK are waiting to sneak into Jammu sector prompting army to keep a hawk-eye vigil at the borders.
