| A TRIBUTE TO DR. RADHAKRISHNAN ON TEACHER’S DAY | | (5TH September) | | Er. L.P.SINGH | 9/5/2009 2:59:36 AM |
| Teacher’s Day in India is celebrated on September 5TH every year and is dedicated to Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan (5th Sep1888-17thApril 1975), who was a staunch believer of education, and was one of the greatest scholar and teacher of all times, apart from being the President of India. When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the President of India in 1962, he was approached by some of his students and friends and requested him to allow them to celebrate 5th September, his "birthday". In reply, Dr.Radhakrishnan said, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers’ day". The request showed Dr.Radhakrishnan love for the teaching profession. From then onwards, this day has been observed as Teachers' Day in India. One of the most celebrated writers in the modern India today, his work varies on philosophical, ethical, educational, social and cultural subjects. He contributed numerous articles to different well-known journals, which, are of immense value and seems to surprise various readers because of the depth in the meaning of the articles. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954 and the Order Of Merit in1963.He received a Peace prize of the German Book Trade in 1961 and the Templeton Prize in 1975, a few months before his death. He denoted the entire Templeton Prize amount to Oxford University. The Oxford University instituted the Radhakrishnan scholarship in the year 1989 which was later renamed as Radhakrishnan Chevening scholarship in his memory. Teachers mold the lives that they influence because the lessons learned from teachers remain with their students throughout life. We should always respect our teachers. Teachers need encouragement and support from the community to feel that their devotion to students is appreciated. There have been many people who have influenced me and those who have set great examples in my life. Many of those people were teachers that I have had from Kindergarten to the present time. If I had to choose one who has had the greatest influence, it would have to be Mr. Ashok Suri at Model Academy School Jammu in the year 1985 when I was in 12th standard. He put much effort and time in teaching English. He was always kind, thoughtful, and generous. He continually listened to what we had to say. His class was always the best - I felt most comfortable in the environment he set up and it was fun every day. I had hated English up until that point, but he taught me to love it! He was always so clear in his explanations and I could always understand what he was trying to get at. He always came into the classroom bring a positive attitude that set us all going. I respect this gentleman, who is still taking English classes at his residence without taking a single penny. On this special day I would like to thank Prof K.V.Adiga and Prof K.Umashankar of M.I.T.Manipal College who taught us Electrical subjects along with various aspects of life way back in 1986-1990. I wish and pray for their good health.
By having celebrations on Teacher’s day, we convey the message that we care for our teachers. Celebrating Teacher’s day is recognition of the devotion with which teachers undertake the responsibility of educating a child. Apart from being the day when we give recognition to our teacher’s hard work, this day enables a healthy interaction between the students and teachers. However simple the celebration may be, they reflect the fact that we care for our teachers. So, we should never forget to celebrate this special day for our teachers. This day thus pays tribute to Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan and the entire Teacher’s faculty like him, who are honest, dedicated, sincere and spend their lives in serving nation.
