| Baglihar Engineer drowns, four students washed away Woman dead, 28 rescued from flashfloods | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 4: On a day of gory tragedies across the region, a senior Engineer and Consultant at Baglihar project was drowned and in the unintended consequences of efforts to fish his body out claimed lives of at least four students in the downstream of Chenab River along Ramban. While two minor children (both brothers) are reported to have drowned in a pond in Akhnoor, a woman was washed away even as 28 others were rescued in flashfloods that rocked the Ujh river along a Kathua village. In yet another tragic incident, an official of the Subordinate Services Recruitment Board (SSRB) was knocked to death by an over-speeding vehicle at Panama Chowk area of the Capital City. Reports said that a senior consultant and engineer with Baglihar Dam project was among five people drowned in river Chenab in Ramban district. The Engineer belonged to Trikuta Nagar locality of Jammu City. ''The engineer, Akshay Gupta, who was inspecting the Baglihar Dam gate in routine, was washed away with speedy currents of water in river Chenab this morning,'' police sources told Early Times. Soon after spreading the news all the gates were immediately closed but till then the fast water currents had washed him away. Police party headed by Abid Rafiqee launched search operation along with employees of the Bhagliar power project and fished out the body at Metra Ramban. “We have fished out the body from Metra and shifted to hospital for post mortem” SHO Chanderkote Abid Rafiqee told. He said Police has registered a case in this regard and taken up the investigations under section 174 Cr PC. After completing all the legal formalities the body was handed over to family members. Incidentally, the closure of Dam gates for fishing out body of the Engineer led to sudden decline in the water discharge in Chenab River seeing which students of a government school in a downstream village and got washed away. The four children were students of government middle school in village Maiatran of Ramban district. ''Search and rescue parties were pressed into service immediately after the mishap. No trace of the washed away students could be found till last reports poured in late tonight. Police identified the deceased as Mohammed Ashraf son of Mohammed Yousuf, Tanveer Ahmad son of Abdul Hammed Ashiq Hussian son of Mohammed Rafiq all residents of Metra Ramban. Meanwhile, a woman was washed away in flash floods, while 28 others were rescued from Kathua district, police said today. Twenty-three persons, including some school children, were caught in the flash floods in Ujh river in Kot-Punan village of Kathua district last evening. Of them, 22 were rescued by the BSF and police personnel while 40-year-old Sudesh Kumari was washed away by the high current of the flood. Six persons and ten horses involved in collecting pebbles from the banks of river Tawi in Jammu were also caught in the flash flood. They were, however, later rescued by civil defence and police personnel, they said. According to another report shock gripped a remote village on the city outskirts of Akhnoor when two minor boys drowned in a pond in the town. Police sources said two brothers Parul (9) and Abheet (6) who went missing yesterday, were found dead in a pond in Manani village. The family members were not at home when the siblings went out. After searching them for long, the villagers found their bodies from the pond last evening, the sources said However; the bodies were fished out and handed over to the family for the last rites.
