| Mubarak Mandi may soon look like Victoria Downtown | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 4: If the plans conceived by Tourism Department see the proverbial day of light, the rich heritage of the Dogras is all set for a world class appearance to match historic buildings of Victoria Downtown or closer home Colonial era’s majestic structures of Kolkatta. The state tourism department has planned to restore the lost glory to priceless structures like Mubarak Mandi by undertaking a massive illumination drive. These architectural delights were till now resigned to darkness in spite of being as much a part of the city's heritage as the Victoria Memorial is to London. The department has decided to light up these buildings and include them as landmarks in the tourist map. After a reviewing a power-point presentation by an expert consultancy group, the Minister for Tourism and Culture Nawang Rigzin Jora, who is personally monitoring the heritage conservation project in Jammu, said that illumination plan shall be extended to all historical buildings across Jammu region. Jora said that historical buildings in and around Jammu offer a glimpse of the rich and vivid Dogra culture and heritage and as such their illumination shall to their tourists attraction. Asserting that promotion of non conventional tourism is among top priorities of the state government, the Minister said that illumination of these places would help in show casing the rich heritage and culture of the state in more impressive manner. "The historical monuments are a tourist attraction only during the day. Of late, the city has become quite a popular destination which leaves a lot of scope to develop night tourism. The idea of illuminating the heritage structures and buildings thus took birth," said the Tourism Minister who recently traveled across the length and breadth of Jammu region to personally have a look and feel of tourism potential. The illumination proposal has two parts. One, static lighting that will take care of the facade. Spotlights and beamers will be placed at strategic curves and angles, which will bring out the architectural genius of the buildings. Second, the dynamic illumination mechanism, which is a computerized lighting system, will create a match and mix of colours. The monthly electricity bill will also come down as these types of illumination consume less power. Interestingly, this advantage comes along Tourism Minister Rigzin Jora’s recent experience as Power Minister. Though the department has to yet to undertake a feasibility study, the heritage structures being considered for the illumination are a wide selection across the region. It will help take the tourists to these places at night with guides competent to narrate the history of the structures. "Not only will it help attract more tourists to these destinations but also generate revenue for the state. If some of the heritage buildings along rivers and ravines can be illuminated, the river heritage tourism project will also receive a boost," explains a senior official. The list will have more names only after the tourism department holds talks with the stakeholders involved.
