Shot in arm for Central University in Jammu Congress, BJP, PDP share platform, want campus in Samba
NC, Panthers abstain CUAS meeting
MUNISH GUPTA9/6/2009 11:32:54 PM

Jammu, Sept 6: The campaign for establishment of Central University in Jammu today got an unprecedented shot in arm as moving beyond the customary press statements, the Jammu based leaders of almost all political parties –including Peoples Democratic Party and excluding National Conference –today shared platform to reiterate their resolve for getting the premiere institution of higher learning set up in Samba.
Conspicuous by their absence were the legislators of the Panthers Party at a meeting organized by the Central University Andolan Samiti here today where all other parties had sent their members for token representation. While none of the Ministers of ruling party legislators turned up in the meeting, the show was numerically dominated by the BJP but senior Congress leaders Madan Lal Sharma and Mangat Ram Sharma made their presence felt well.
Addressing the meeting the speakers, one after the other, said that Jammu had always been discriminated in the hands of Kashmir centric leadership but now Jammu must wake up to fight for their legitimate rights of which they have been ignored for the last sixty years.
“The intentions of the government and party is clear that CU will be established at Samba as proposed by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, but some bureaucrats are playing ‘mischief’ and are feeding wrong information to the government” stated Congress Member of Parliament Madan Lal Sharma. Blaming the bureaucratic lobby for creating hindrance for establishing of CU at Samba, Sharma said, “There are some vested interest who are trying to create confusion so that establishment of the CU gets delayed and diverted”. 'Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has transparent intentions over setting up of Central University in Jammu but he is being misled by his sub-ordinates, who wants to create a mess on the issue for their own benefits,'' Madan told reporters at the sidelines of function. He, however, said that Central University has ''exclusively'' been sanctioned to Jammu by the Centre.
''Jammu region has been discriminated for the past 60 years but no compromise was reached on the existing issues,'' the MP said adding, ''the state has three regions including Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and Central Government without being biased, can also sanction three universities for each region.'' Meanwhile, Sharma said that people in Kashmir, no matters they represent People's Democratic Party (PDP), National Conference (NC) and Hurriyat Conference, have same psyche and ideology, ''it is unfortunate that Jammu based politicians, despite decades old discrimination, have yet to unite and fight for their rights.'' Extending his support to the CUAS, Sharma urged Samiti to give due consideration to the problems faced by the students who are losing precious time due to the month long agitation. “Our youth should not suffer and no body should be allowed to politicize the issue for their own petty political gains”, he said.
Except Panthers Party MLAs, all the political parties including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sent its leaders to discuss the issue of CU. Former Minister and PDP leader, Manjit Singh however blamed coalition government for delaying the CU project. “Blaming anybody else is nonsense, if the University was given to Jammu why government is not going ahead with the project. They are responsible for the confusion”, Singh added.
While PDP and Congress tried to get closer to the CUAS, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the Kashmir based political parties for ‘conspiracy’ to deny Jammu region the proposed Central University for continued discrimination. “Time has come to launch Jehad against the Kashmiri leadership so that discrimination of past six decades is avenged”, State President BJP Ashok Khajuria said. Meanwhile CUAS convener, Pavitar Singh once again called upon the leadership of Jammu region to support the present agitation and reiterated his stand for the continuation of agitation.
Former Deputy Chief Minister, Mangat Ram Sharma, former Minister, Manjeet Singh, former MP, Tarlok Singh Bajwa. Ashwani Sharma, Independent candidate from Bishnah, BJP MLA and senior leader Chaman Lal Gupta, Ashok Khajuria and Baldev Raj attended the meeting
