| Mufti worried over rising bellicose diplomatic tones | | | Early Times Report Srinagar Sept 8: Worried over the bellicosity in diplomatic channels, former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party patron has once again reminded the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh of his commitments on peace in Jammu and Kashmir. Referring to the grim revival of apparent cold war rhetoric across diplomatic channels, Mufti said “this depressingly evolving situation not only belied hopes of the millions in the two countries rooting for peace and friendship but had already started casting its dark shadows on J&K”. The former Chief Minister was addressing a party convention in north Kashmir township of Baramulla. Urging the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to take bold action to arrest the drift in Indo Pak relations, Mufti said the worries about rising tensions were the highest in J&K for obvious reasons. He said he had been repeatedly cautioning about the fragility of peace in absence of sincere and purposeful measures to carry forward the peace process in all its dimensions. He said the recently reported violations on the LOC and the warnings of retaliation had the potential of reviving the all too familiar scenario of active hostility that had bedeviled the two neighbors for decades with disastrous impact on J&K but had seemed as a thing of the past following the 2003 Vajpayee initiative. Referring to the reopening of Srinagar Muzaffarabad road in 2005, Mufti said it had been achieved through positive political action in the state that convinced two successive prime ministers to defy the frozen mindsets among policy planners. ‘While this had paid tremendous dividends in the shape of reviving ties between two parts of the divided state, he said it had also opened vast opportunities of progress which unfortunately was not followed up resulting in vanishing of interest in the enterprise. Citing example of no visitor to Kashmir, he said it was because of the lack of official interest and continued hassles in documentation that the latest Caravan e Amman bus had no passengers on it. ‘Dialogue proposals have met a tragic treatment with the dissident leaders finding themselves in prison, he said and added this is a tried method that has failed in the past and has no chance in future. The only course open to government he stressed was to resume peace process in all its dimensions and realize that Kashmir problem would not be resolved unless it actually is. Referring to the Self Rule vision of his party Mufti said apart from political, constitutional and intra state elements it had strong economic components as well. Addressing the convention senior leader and former deputy chief minister Muzaffar Hussein Baig explained various aspects of self rule to the workers and asked them to create an awareness about it at the grass roots level. He said the adoption of Self Rule could open up the state to outside world and will revive its cultural and business contacts within two parts of the erstwhile state. Senior Vice president Molvi Iftikhar Hussein Ansari stressed the need for revocation of laws like AFSPA to give a free hand to civil society and its institutions to run their affairs without interference. Others who spoke on the occasion included party general secretary Mohammad Dilawar Mir, Syed Basharat Bukhari MLA, Javed Baig, Wajahat Qureishi and Ghulam Mohiuddin.
