NC bartered people’s wishes for lust of power Kashmir problem can be solved only by addressing alienation: Mehbooba

Early Times Report
DODA, Sept 10- Terming self-rule proposal as visionary document formulated with the 50 years political experience of Mufti Mohammad Sayed, president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti today said that the vexed Kashmir problem would be solved only through this proposal.
Addressing one day convention organized by her party to educate workers on self-rule, she said that rulers of Delhi should keep in mind that transfer of power from one political group to another was not the solution of this problem. “This problem can be solved only by addressing alienation of the people”, she said and added that self-rule proposal was aimed at solving both internal and external dimensions of the problem.
“As the National Conference has repeatedly compromised with the wishes and urges of the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the lust of power, there is feeling among rulers of Delhi that attaining power is the only aim of the leaders of Kashmir”, she regretted but hastened to add “fulfilling aspirations and wishes of the people is one and only agenda of the PDP”.
“Had we compromised with the aspirations of the people PDP would have been in the power”, she said and asserted that instead of bartering people’s aspirations for lust of power, PDP remained struck to its pro-people agenda. “Unlike National Conference we prefer to sit in opposition rather than compromising with our agenda”, she said.
Recounting the repeated compromises made by the National Conference leadership to remain in power, PDP chief said that since 1947 National Conference has been eroding special status of the State for lust of power. She reminded that before 1975, State Legislature had the power to restore the status of Sadar-e-Rasiyat but after Indira-Sheikh accord, NC leadership had brazenly surrendered that status before New Delhi.
Highlighting self-rule proposal, she said that PDP through its agenda want to restore dignity and honour of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and to take this problem to the logical conclusion. “Self-rule document has been prepared by incorporating wishes and aspirations of all regions and sub-regions of the State”, she said and made it clear that this proposal advocates empowerment of all regions and sub-regions.
“Highlighting other aspects of the self-rule document, she said that this proposal advocates unification of both sides of Kashmir without changing the border. “Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has himself mooted the proposal of joint mechanism”, she pointed out and added that self-rule favours constitution of a Council comprising representatives of both sides of Kashmir as well as nominees from New Delhi and Islamabad.
PDP chief regretted that the government has failed to safeguard life and dignity of the people of this State. She made it clear that scrapping of draconian laws like Armed Special Forces Act was must to restore dignity and honour of the common masses.
Demanding compensation for the losses due to Indus Water Treaty, she pointed out that State has been incurring a whooping loss of rupees 72000 crore per annum due to discriminatory water agreement. She demanded compensation for this loss and handing over the power projects to the State.
Party general secretary Thakur Balbir Singh, Sayed Asgar Ali and other senior leaders also threw light on self-rule proposal.
Earlier a resolution was passed in the seminar in which all party leaders paid tributes to those who lost their lives in Assar bus accident. PDP chief while paying tributes to departed souls demanded Rs one lakh as ex-gratia relief for families of those who have lost their lives.
