| In league with Punjab narco-smuggling up in J&K | | | Early Times Report Jammu | Thursday, Sep 10 Incidents of narcotics smuggling from the Kashmir Valley to other parts of the country has put Jammu Police on tenterhooks due to an instant rise in the number of Punjab-based smugglers operating as couriers and arrested here. Police sources said the arrest of over a dozen Punjab-based narcotic smugglers, including women, in a short period is a matter of concern as they are active in narcotic smuggling on the directions of top bosses, operating across the country. ''For the past one month, around 12 smugglers, including four women (all from Punjab), were arrested from different locations on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway while they were transporting a poppy husk and charas from Kashmir to Punjab,'' a senior police official told UNI. The officer, however, said as the smugglers from Kashmir were being easily identified by the police at check points, the top smugglers, operating in the neighbouring Punjab, had introduced local conduits, including women, to get the contrabands smuggled. ''The couriers either travelling in tourist buses or private vehicles to dodge policemen but most of the time, they were held at special nakkas laid on specific inputs following rising incidents of narcotic smuggling,'' the officer said adding that local touts were also helping them in executing the operation.
