| Just boxed: No Comments please! | | | Sant Kumar Sharma Jammu, September 10: On September 8, a road accident at Assar in Doda district claimed 25 lives. At least 25 others were injured, many of them seriously. Most of them are undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College & Hospital here. On the other side of Pir Panjal mountains, in the remote Sumbal area of Bandipora district, a young girl Inshah Javed lost her life in a road accident on Tuesday. The area falls in the constituency represented in the Legislative Assembly by the Speaker, Akbar Lone. Expressing grief over the deaths in Assar, the Chief Minister, Mr Omar Abdullah, directed the administration to pay Rs 25,000 each to the families of those killed and Rs 5,000 each for those injured. On Wednesday, the Speaker, Mr Akbar Lone, visited Sumbal to meet the family of the deceased girl. He also handed over a cheque of Rs 2 lakh to Inshah’s father Javed Ahmed as financial assistance to the grieving family. The Information Department issued press releases regarding both the accidents which are being reproduced hereunder, side by side, verbatim. In the Assar accident, the financial assistance, yet to be paid to the grieving families, is a small amount of Rs 25,000. In the Sumbal accident, the government has already paid Rs 2 lakh to the family of the unfortunate girl who lost her life in a road accident. The financial assistance rendered by the government in one accident is thus Rs 25,000 per victim and in the other case eight times that much i.e. Rs 2 lakh. Is there a standard scale for paying financial assistance to families of unfortunate victims who die in road accidents in the state? Is it Rs 25,000 or is it Rs 2 lakh? Some government officials admitted that ad hocism prevails in the grant of relief or financial assistance. The amount of Rs 25,000 to be paid to the families of the Assar victims, as also Rs 2 lakh paid to the Sumbal family, come from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, they pointed out.
