| Pak’s unilateral decision on Gilgit-Baltistan violates status quo of J&K: Charak | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 11- Expressing concern over Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self Governance Order of August 30, 2009 declaring it 5th Province of Pakistan, J&K Dogra Sadar Sabha has said that by taking this decision unilaterally Pakistan has once again violated the status quo of Jammu and Kashmir. Talking to media persons here today, former Minister and president, Dogra Sadar Sabha, Gulchain Singh Charak said, ‘By imposing direct authority over Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan has once again violated the status quo of J&K since the region is not part of Pakistan’. He said Sabha has decided to elicit views of people of the State for which we are planning a seminar very shortly as the situation demands immediate attention due to the strategic importance of the region affected by the latest move of Pakistan, Charak added. He said, ‘Pakistan illegally offered 43,180 sq. km of Jammu and Kashmir of the Aksai Chin Plateau to China in 1963 without taking India and people of Jammu and Kashmir State into confidence. It is not clear under what law the people of the Northern Areas (Gilgit-Baltistan), a region of 72,496 sq. km., are ruled by Pakistan as a federal territory for the past 58 years’. Giving details, Charak said, ‘Before Pakistan illegally occupied Gilgit-Baltistan, the region remained as an independent entity and in 1947 it was never conquered by Pakistan and on the day of Accession on 26 October 1947, it was ruled by the Governor of J&K State which was princely State from August 15 to October 27, 1947’. Obviously Pakistan has evil design in mind not only for the illegally occupied area of J&K State but for neighbouring areas as well which is a sinister move indeed particularly in view of the Chinese interest in the area which is evident from the recent Chinese air and ground violations, he said. “It is a matter of great concern to the people of the State and certainly to the Dogras who had founded this unique State of Jammu and Kashmir including Gilgit and Baltistan under Maharaja Gulab Singh’ Charak said. The Dogra leader said the Government of India has made it amply clear after the Indian Parliament adopted a unanimous Resolution that the State of Jammu and Kashmir has been, is and shall be integral part of India and any attempt to separate it from the rest of the country will be resisted by all necessary means. Among others present on the occasion were Prof M R Puri, former Vice Chancellor, JU, Maj Gen (retd) G S Jamwal, Sumant Singh Sambyal, DIG BSF (Retd), Prem Sagar Gupta, secretary, Prof N R Sharma, educationists and Dr Anita Bloria, Prof History.
