| Chib hints increasing seats for MBBS, PG courses in Medical Colleges | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept12-The Jammu and Kashmir Government plans to increase the number of seats for the MBBS and PG courses in the two medical colleges in the state. At present each college has 100 seats for MBBS which is quite inadequate when compared to the number of students who pass the 10+2 standard annually. An indication to this effect was given by the Minister for Technical and Medical Education, R. S. Chib. He said once the up gradation project of two medical colleges is completed the government may seek approval from the Medical Council of India to increase number of seats from 100 to 150 in each Medical College. In reply to a question Chib said that the up gradation of the Jammu Medical College was expected to be completed by February-March 2010 and so far over Rs.145 crores had been spent on it. Against this the work on up gradation of Srinagar Medical College was slow as not more than Rs.20 crores had been spent so far. He said he has issued instructions to the agencies engaged in up gradation of the colleges to complete the projects as early as possible. Chib said that the completion of up gradation of Srinagar Medical College may get delayed because of the limited working season in the valley. When asked whether the Government planned to take up with the Medical Council of India the issue of approval of adding more faculties in the two medical colleges Chib said "the matter will be taken up with the Council after the up gradation work had been completed." He said before raising the level of the two medical colleges to that of AIMS it will be difficult for the Council to accept our demand. The Minister stated that besides the up gradation of the two medical colleges the existing faculties were being further strengthened by removing the problem of paucity of staff and equipment. He said that the Government would explore the possibility of sending physicians and surgeons to the country's top medical institutes for refreshing their knowledge and skills so that on their way back they would be able to treat those patients who preferred to visit the PGI or the AIIMS.
