| Amidst CU row, Gujjars ask PM for Tribal University | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 13- Reiterating their demand for establishment of a “National Tribal University” in Pir Panchal belt of State in Indian Himalayas, the Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir today sent a reminder to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Union Minister for Human Resources, Kapil Sibal and sought their intervention to help them out in preserving and propagating the richest tribal art, culture, language and customs through a highest seat of learning. Prior to this, the Gujjars of the State sent three memorandums to Prime Minister and HRD Minister, dully signed by all the dignitaries of Scheduled Tribe communities of State through Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, a National organization working on Gujjars. Urging the need for promoting studies and research in tribal art, culture, tradition, language, custom, medicinal systems, forest based economic activities, including special studies in the flora and fauna, and advancements in technologies relating to natural resources of the tribal areas of the state the Gujjars said that only Tribal University can fulfill all these growing demands. Dr. Javaid Rahi National Secretary of Tribal Foundation told here today that a delegation from J&K State met Union Minister for Human Resource Development in New Delhi last year and submitted a memorandum seeking establishment of Tribal University in Jammu but nothing concrete has emerged out of it so far He said , “The Tribals constitute a sizeable population of Jammu and Kashmir State and Gujjars comprise 85% of the Scheduled Tribe communities” , adding that “setting up of a university exclusively for promoting avenues for higher education and research facilities for the tribal population and will defiantly trim down the feeling of discriminations among various tribal groups”. He said to press over genuine demand Ghulam Nabi Azad the then chief minister of the State met HRD Minister in New Delhi on May 11 last year and requested for setting up of the tribal university in Jammu and Kashmir. He said t Gujjars also urged the present Chief Minister , Omar Abdullah to press the union government over the issue as the establishment of Tribal University will cater to the specific educational needs of the tribal and marginalized population of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and other north western States of Himalaya.
