| Ladakh to get 45 MW Power Station by Aug 2010 | | | Early Times Report LEH, SEPTEMBER 14 – The 45 MW Nimoo-Bazgo Hydroelectric Project in Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir is scheduled to be completed by August 2010, at an estimated cost of over Rs. 611 crore. This was conveyed to the Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra, during his visit to the project site at Alchi, about 70 km from Leh, today.
The Project is a run-off the river scheme to harness the hydel power potential of river Indus. The Project will have three units of 15 MW each and produce 239.33 Million Units of Power annually.
The Executive Director, NHPC Limited, Mr. Jatinder Singh and the Chief Engineer, NHPC, Mr. J. K. Sharma, briefed the Governor about the salient features of the Project, when he visited the site of the Hydel Project and, later, during a power point presentation. It was stated that the power generated from this Project will go a long way in meeting the electricity requirements of the people of the Ladakh region.
The Governor, who took keen interest in varied aspects of this important Project, was briefed that the work on the concreting of the dam is going on in full swing and 60 percent of it has been completed so far, while the remaining 40 percent is targeted to be accomplished by August 2010.
The Governor had a detailed discussion on the status of all the components of the Project. He emphasized the need for the completion of this Project well within the targeted date.
Earlier, the Governor laid the foundation stone of 66/11 KV, 6.3 MVA electric Sub-Station at Bazgo. The Sub-Station will be one of the six such Sub-Stations being constructed in the area under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojna. The work on all the six Sub-Stations has commenced and is scheduled to be completed by October 2010. The work on these Sub-Stations and the entire power distribution system in the region will be completed in two phases.
The Governor stressed that advance and timely planning needed to be undertaken to procure the required construction materials at site by fixed dates during the summer months, in order to ensure the timely completion of the project, with work having continued during the winter as well. He said that such an approach is of vital importance for areas like Ladakh region, which have a limited working season and long distances of the places from where the materials are procured.
The First Lady, Mrs. Usha Vohra, Councilors of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh, who belonged to the area, Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Raj Kumar Goyal, Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Mr. A. K. Sahu, SSP Leh, Mr. B. S. Tuti, Conservator of Forests, Mr. Jigmet Takpa, and senior engineers and officers of NHPC Limited were also present on the occasion.
A deputation of Basgo Welfare Committee met the Governor and submitted a memorandum, highlighting their demands, which, interalia, include development of Basgo as a heritage village and incentives for promotion of tourism activities in the area. He gave a patient hearing to the deputation.
The Governor also visited the Alchi Monastery where he paid obeisance and prayed for communal harmony, brotherhood, amity, peace, progress and prosperity in the State.
A deputation of the people of Alchi also met the Governor and demanded the power generated from the Nimoo-Bazgo Hydroelectric Project should be supplied to them at concessional rates and people from the village should be given employment in the Project. The Governor discussed the employment issue with the Executive Director and General Manager of NHPC and Deputy Commissioner, Leh District.
