| Drive against vehicles without number plates, underage drivers | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sep 15 : In Jammu and Kashmir, trafic police has decided to launch a massive drive against government and police vehicles plying without number plates, underage drivers and other traffic violators. Taking a serious note of allegation about misbehaviour, overcharge and overloading by transporters, the traffic department had set up 20 complaint boxes at different places in the city and outskirts where commuters can make complaint against any driver or conductor, Superintendent of Police Showkat Ahmad Shah said. He said a person has to get complaint card from the traffic police official and write his or her complaint against any driver or conductor for any violation. Shah admitted that there are reports about overloading, rash driving and misbehaviour by some drivers and conductors. ''Though we cannot change the system overnight, but setting up complaint boxes will make definitely some difference on the ground,'' he said. He said 550 vehicles were challaned in a single day for violating different traffic rules. However, of them 80 vehicles were challaned for overloading, he informed. The SP said the drive would continue and in fact it would be intensified after Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. He said during the past about 45 days, the traffic police has challaned 15,000 scooterists and motorcyclist for not wearing crash helments.''I will not claim that we have succeeded in our task, but I can say 70 per cent are now wearing crash helmets,'' he said adding drive against those not wearing crash helments will continue.
