| Over 8 lakh kanals of land under legal, illegal occupation of forces | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sep 15: Amidst a campaign of demilitarization from the separatists and the mainstream Peoples Democratic Party, official figures have revealed that more than 8.5 lakh kanals of agriculture and non-agriculture land in Jammu and Kashmir are under occupation of different security force agencies. Out of this more than 71,000 kanals of land has been occupied by the security forces illegally while more than 1.20 lakh kanal under Land Acquisition Act. The breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) has recently announced to launch a massive protest against the occupation of land by the security forces in the state after Eid-ul-Fitr. According to official reports available, 8,55,407 kanals and 18 malras of agriculture and non-agriculture land was under the occupation of Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), BEACON and other security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir. It said highst 2,633,76 kanals of land in Leh is under the occupation of different security agencies followed by Nubra 1,33,804 kanals, Akhnoor 64311 kanals, Mendhar 56862 kanals, Jammu 56144 kanals, Udhampur 32329 kanals and 18 malras, Samba 31525 kanals and 6 malras, Hinra Nagar 14864 kanals, Haveli 13311 kanals, Badgam 20950 kanals and 18 malras, Uri 15602 kanals and 12 malras, Srinagar south 15364 kanals, Srinagar north 12949 kanals, Karnah 12935, R S Pora 11278 kanals, Awantipora 3636 kanals and 14 malras and rest in other parts of the state. Out of the total land with security forces, 1,21,478 kanals and 15 malras are occupied by them under Land Acquisition Act. Under this Act, occupied land becomes the property of the party which has acquired it. It said that security forces illegally occupied 71569 kanals and five malras of land in different parts of the state. Officials said with effect from February 16 last year, for land requisitioned under the Requisitioning and Acquisition of Immovable Property Act Act 1968, rental compensation was being released to the land owners at revised rate as notified in April 2008. They said the compensation for requisitioned property other than agriculture land is paid by the authority concerned every quarter. However, in case of agriculture land, the compensation was being paid on a six monthly basis or on release of the land, whichever is earlier.
