| SC/ST Students hold protest for release of scholarships | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 16- All J&K ST/SC Students Federation held protests in Jammu University against the ‘Non issuance of Post Matriculation scholarship’ among ST students The protestors were led by Haq Nawaz Chowdhary, state president of the Federation. Addressing the protestors Chowdhary alleged that as per the Government of India norms this scholarship is provided to the students in the month of Jan/Feb but despite lapse of nine months no scholarship has been provided to the ST students which is their constitutional right. “It has been learnt that Tribal Affairs Department is making payment of Post Matric scholarship among few selected institutions of Kashmir valley only and the rest of institutions especially whole of Jammu Province is deprived of the basic rights of students”, he informed. Choudhary also alleged that tribal affairs department is in nexus with some of the private computers training institutions of the state and amount claimed by them is totally fraud and not based on facts. ‘But unfortunately the tribal affairs department because of its vested interest is trying to accommodate these illegal institutions at the cost of marginalized ST students which is quite injustice’, he said and sought the attention of the higher authorities in this matter. Federation also criticized the eligibility of 55%-60% criteria fixed by the State Government for getting Post matriculation scholarship to ST/SC students and requested the government to review the existing criteria. The federation appealed the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Minister of Social Welfare Minister to personally intervene into the matter. Among others who participated in the protest were Mohammed Freed, Shahjahan, Sajjad, Ishfaq, Qayoom and Ajaz Kataria.
