| New scheme launched to revolutionize sheep production | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 16 The embryo transfer technology is under way in Jammu and Kashmir for revolutionizing sheep development programme, official sources said adding that the state Government has decided to provide sufficient funds for ensuring success in the experiment. Sources said that the above said scientific experiment would help the experts in developing "muttonous" breed of sheep called Dorper. The results of this experiment are expected to be out by the end of the current year. Sources said that once the experiment was a success a duly Government funded extension programme at commercial level would be started during the current year. Henceforth the Jammu and Kashmir state government has also decided to create more sheep rearing units in the private sector with the view to improve availability of mutton and wool and also generate additional employment in this sector. The idea behind all these schemes was to reduce the import of sheep, sources said and added that on an average he state would import about 16 lakh sheep annually for meeting the shortage of mutton.
