| A shy Sopore girl makes it to the US State Department | | | Early Times Report Jammu, September 16: A shy girl from Sopore, in north Kashmir, has hit the newspaper headlines. She is none but Farah Pandith who had migrated to the USA with her parents when she was barely a two-year old baby. Farah has been appointed as special Representative to the Muslim communities in the US State Department. And the US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, administered the oath. The American senior official demonstrated utmost respect for the holy Quran. Clinton, while administering oath, suggested to Farah to touch the holy book with her left hand and raise her right hand while taking the oath. She did it and touched the holy book, that was in the lap of her mother. Farah is not new to the diplomatic and social assignments. Earlier she had worked in the Department of European Affairs. Reports reaching here said that Clinton had persuaded Farah to accept the challenging assignment. Clinton was happy that Farah accepted the offer and her mother, brother, aunt and cousin, who were present during the oath ceremony, had also played their role in motivating Farah in accepting the new assignment. According to these reports, Farah was found to fit in the scheme of the American President, Barack Obama, relating to building a relationship with the Muslim world. Soon after taking over as the President, Barack Obama, had announced that he would build a r elationship with the muslim wiorld that is based on "mutual interest and respect.” Since Obama has realised that friendly relations with Muslims, who constitute over 1.4 billion population in the world, alone could ensure peace in the world he has decided to initiate measures that would usher in friendly ties between the US and other Muslim countries. Barack Obama has stated that his interest in promoting cordial ties with the Muslims was to "share ideas which could ensure peaceful and prosperous future.” And Hillar Clinton, before administering oath to Farah, said that Farah was highly competent to fulfill the task for which she has been chosen. Hitherto, Sopore has been known for its fruit industry as it is considered to be the apple bowl of the Kashmir valley. It also used to be called a "Chota" London" on the basis of the prosperity of the people whose main engagement was fruit cultivation and export. Now onwards the town will be known for having given birth to a reputed diplomat and academician of the stature of Farah Pandith. No doubt doctors and engineers of Kashmir origin have made a mark in various foreign lands, including the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada, Fr ance and the middle east, but after T.N. Ganjoo, who was connected with the Indian mission in the USA,Farah is the latest discovery of those people of Kashmiri origin who have earned a name for themselves.
