9/17/2009 10:27:57 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, September 17: Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Ghulam Hassan Mir today reviewed the assessment of losses caused by the two-day ago hailstorm which lashed parts of Kashmir in Baramulla, Kupwara, Shopian and Pulwama and Jammu areas at a high level meeting of officers here today. The hailstorm had caused massive damage to crops in these areas.
Present in the meeting were Financial Commissioner, Revenue, Mr. R. K. Jerath, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Mrs. Naseema Lanker and other senior officers.
Asking the officers to adopt a pro-farmer attitude, the Minister asked them for a time bound loss assessment so that the affected farmers and orchardists are provided relief in time.
The meeting was told that roughly around 50% losses have so far been reported to standing crops due the recent hailstorms which swept parts of the state in last three months. The meeting was also told that a special Girdawari of the hailstorm hit areas has been suggested and would be taken up soon. The meeting also discussed other relief measures like Natural Calamity Relief Fund and free ration to the affected farmers.
Addressing the meeting, Mr. Mir said the recent hailstorm once again underscores the need for adopting Crop Insurance Scheme on priority. He appealed officers and farmers to make the scheme a success so that the farming community in future is insulated of the loss effects of any Natural calamity.
The Minister also expressed concern over the conversion of productive agricultural land into non agricultural practices. He directed the Agriculture department to be vigilant in this regard and report any such violation into the notice of concerned revenue authorities for further punitive action.
