Train set to chug on Qazigund-Anantag section

New Delhi, Sept 18: Plans are afoot to flag off the first train on Qazigund-Anantnag rail section early next month. Top level leaders from Delhi may visit the Kashmir Valley to mark the occasion that would complete the rail link from Qaziguind to Barmulla.
Since this is going to be soon after the possible contacts between Indian and Pakistani leaders at UN General Assembly being held this month, the possibility of the railway related event assuming a political nature is also not being ruled out. Sources say that this would depend upon the outcome of meetings, if they take place, between Indian and Pakistani sides on the sidelines of UN General Assembly.
According to them, Union Railway Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee, met top officials here on Tuesday to convince them that both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance chairperson, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, should visit the Valley to inaugurate the short yet important rail stretch between Anantanag and Qazigund which would complete the 119-kilometre-long Qazigund-Baramulla section of the Indian Railway, covering the better part of the Kashmir Valley.
Like the treacherous terrain that is being linked with rail after accomplishing quite a few marvels vis-à-vis engineering since 1996, equally onerous task of bringing peace back to the Valley figures high in Delhi’s scheme.
Saying this, a source, remarked that all options were being weighed, including Union Railway Minister’s request to wave flag for the Valley train through the hands of Dr Manmohan Singh and/or Mrs Sonia Gandhi on this stretch too as has been the case in the past with other rail segments of 345-kilometres-long Jammu-Baramulla rail link which are being opened in stages since 2005.
Both Mr Manmohan Singh and Mrs Sonia Gandhi have been to the Valley where rail inauguration has been at the top of their engagements during their visit to Jammu and Kashmir.
