| After axe, Police sets ‘co-accused’ free | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 19: Close to the heels of axe falling on a string of Police officers in the sensational cold blooded murder of Sikh youth Amandeep Singh, the nervous Police paraphernalia last night set free a “co-accused” in the case who was arrested and flimsy grounds and released in almost same manner. Sumit Gondi was initially named as a co-accused in Amandeep murder case but a day after the incident the Police clarified that he was not involved but still wanted in another case at Peer Mitha Police station. Finally on August 29, Sumit is reported to have surrendered before the Police but the same was not made known. His formal arrest was put in the Police registers on September 4 at Peer Mitha Police Station. However, the next day he was taken to Gandhi Nagar Police station on the instructions of SSP who said Sumit Gondi could give clues about location of Royal Singh, a co-accused in Amandeep murder case. Royal was arrested seven days later but Sumit Gondi continued to be in the Police lockup till the middle of last night. Barely few hours after the SSP, SP, SDPO, SHO, Investigation Officer and Munshi were placed under suspension following an inquiry into alleged tampering of evidence that the Police set Sumit Gondi free who was kept in detention since August 29. On official records his arrest has been shown September 4, 2009, but it is alleged that Sumit was not in-fact arrested but himself made surrender to Showkat Hussian, SHO Police Station Pee-Mitha. After arrest or surrender of Sumit Gondhi SHO Peer Mitha informed his senior and transited Sumit Gondhi to Gandhi Nagar Police to face the investigation in Amandeep murder case but neither the Inquiry officer nor the SHO Police Station Peer Mitha Jammu made any attempt to produce both Royal Singh and Sumit Gondhi before any any court of law, now after receiving the information from the locals the officers there in P/S Peer Mitha came out of their sleep and started harassing the family members of Sumit Gondhi who was disowned by his parents after his controversial marriage. When this reporter asked the IO of stabbing case (at Peer Mitha Police station) to comment on the issue he tried to beat about the bush and blamed the SHO for his failure and said “we did not have any vehicle, so how could I go there to Gandhinagar Police Stataion to Gondi back. When contacted a senior Police officer in the city jurisdiction said that Gondi’s detention at Gandhi Nagar was illegal and his release was equally illegal as in that event he should have been handed over to the Peer Mitha Police station.
