| 6.3 intensity recorded | | | Early Times Report Guwahati, Sep 21 : A major earthquake hit the North East today at around 1425 hours rocking the urban centres like Guwahati and Shillong for more than 15 seconds. According to a report from the Central Seismological Observatory in Shillong, the earthquake has 6.3 intensity in the Richter scale and the epicenter is somewhere in the Nagaland-Myanmar border. The series of earthquakes have been viewed in positive light as the local geologists confirmed of tectonic movements but added such frequent moderate earthquakes reduce the possibility of a bigger quake. The last time Assam experienced high-intensity quakes were in 1950 and 1897. These two earthquakes have caused major topographical changes, including a diversion in the course of some major rivers. However, in both 1897 and 1950, human casualty and damage to property were less owing to a sparser population and the virtual absence of high-rises. Last year's seismic risk assessment under the microzonation studies in the city had found its western part to be a seismically active zone. The report had been prepared after five years of extensive scientific investigation. The city's seismically high-hazard zone covers Lachitpur, Teteliya, Mirzapur, and Dekapara areas, including the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Bridges and flyovers which may have been damaged should not be crossed and vehicles must pull to the side of a road and stop if driving during an earthquake. The Disaster Management Wing of every state had been activated in the region.
