Qazi concludes Leh, Kargil tour
Addresses public meetings, inspects works

Srinagar, September 30 – Minister for Forests, Environment, Housing and Urban Development Qazi Mohammad Afzal while addressing a series of public gathering in Kargil and Leh districts during a week long tour has said that the government is making all out efforts for providing basic amenities to the people in all three regions of the state saying that backward and far off areas like Panikhar, Saleskoo, Samrah are being given special attention for overall development.
During his tour, the Minister alongwith the officers of district administration visited recent flood affected areas of Samrah and took stock of flood situation in these areas.
The Minister was informed by the district administration that in Samrah heavy damage has caused to the residential houses, crops and public infrastructure due to floods. While interacting with the people of this area, Minister said that one month free ration has been sanctioned for flood affected people. He assured the people that he would take up the matter regarding providing of free ration for 6 months with the Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad. The Minister also assured the people that the Sunrah flood affected Nallah would be taken under Participatory Watershed Management Project (PWMP).
Mr. Qazi Afzal said repairs and renovation of irrigation khuls and protection bands would be constructed.
Minister also convened a meeting of officers of the forest Department besides district development Commissioner, Kargil Kachoo Isfandyar Khan senior officers and local political leaders attend the meeting also.
It was decided in the meeting that two new permit timber depots at Sankoo and Zanskar and four new temporary timber Depots at Panikhar, Saliskot, Shaker Dhoo and Luchum Shalgoul have been sanctioned. Besides, 17000 sq. ft. timber has been sanctioned for Kargil district during the current financial year which involved 5000 sq. ft more than last year’s allocation. Mr. Qazo Afzal said that besides this quota 3000 sq. ft timber would also be allotted to the people of Kargil district in the next year.
Minister was informed by the J&K State Forest Research Institute, six works on cold desert development in Kargil and Leh have been taken in hand. The Minister was informed that all the allotted works during the current year have been completed in full. These works include establishment of preservation over an area of four hectares at Foker-Phoo, Medical Plant Nursery at Drass and Sankoo, Pasture and grass land development at Drass and Hanbotingla Lalung and study on Defoilator insect on willow in Leh and Kargil.
Enroute several deputations met the Minister and apprised him about their problems including machmadization of Kargil to sankoo road, speeding up of work on Mini Hydel project, Tusjam and installation of Mobile tower at Sankoo. The Minister heared these deputationists patiently and assured them that their grievances would be considered sympathetically in a phased manner.
