| Mir asks experts to protect economic interests of farmers | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, September 23- Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Ghulam Hassan Mir today underscored the need for a holistic approach for the management of land and water resources even as he asked the experts to protect the economic interests of farmers while formulating such an approach.
Addressing a day long conference of Agricultural officers here today, the Minister asked for taking marketing and value addition concepts into account while formulating such an approach which he said should be directed towards the betterment of economic condition of the farming community. He said since the land resources have remained the same and population has increased there is an urgent need for development of waste lands.
Mr. Mir also suggested taking industries related to agricultural and food processing to villages so that the rural economy gets the desired thrust and the sector is able to sustain itself as a profitable venture.
On the role and condition of farmers in agriculture, the Minister said no country can progress without achieving welfare for the farming community. He said the fate of country’s progress is linked with the fate of farmers and neglecting them would tantamount to neglecting the growth and development of the country. He said once in problems a farmer cannot give the desired results as has been witnessed in many parts of the country where farmers went to the extent of committing suicides.
Mr. Mir said of the 12,000 hectares of the land in state about 60% is rain fed while underscoring the need for watershed management. He asked for prompt and timely transfer of technology from labs to the farmers.
The Minister asked the officers to work with dedication to make up for the losses incurred to the agriculture sector during the last two decades.
Earlier, in his speech, Principal Secretary Agriculture, Mrs. Sonali Kumar reflected the need for harvesting the rain water and watershed management.
In his presentation, Dr. V.K. Bahughana technical experts from the National Rainfed Authority of India gave a resume of the activities of its organisation for conservation of water for agricultural use.
