Zardari wants US to reimburse expenses incurred on fighting terrorists

Early Times Report

Jammu,September 23 :- Soon after the Pakistan envoy to the United states,Husain Haqqani, said that the global community has appreciated Pakistan's war against the terrorists in the Swat valley and adjoining areas President Asif Ali Zardari urged the American Government to reimburse 1.6 billion dollars that Islamabad had spent on fighting terrorists in the tribal areas, according to media reports in Pakistan.
Under an agreement the United States pays for the anti-terrorists operations from a special account called coalition support fund. However,Pakistan has not received any amount out of this fund during the last over one year. The issue was raised by Zardari when he held talks with US officials including special envoy,Richard Holbrooke.Zardari has informed the US officials that besides heavy expenses entailed in carrying out military operations against the extremists in Swat and the NWFP Pakistan needed money for providing relief to those millions of people who fled to safety after the Army clashed with the terrorists in the Swat Valley and the NWFP.
In addition to this Zardari has reminded the international donors the need for fulfilling their commitments, made during the Tokyo conference early this year, that they would pay six billion dollars to Pakistan to overcome its economic crisis.Zardari has stated that in various parts of Pakistan poverty
among a sectio of people had reached a stage where people have begun commiting suicides. It may be mentioned here that recently 20 members of a family in Pakistan had committed suicide by consuming poisonous substances.Official reports have stated that last year 3325 people committed suicide in Pakistan.Alongwith this the rate in suicide attacks by the terrorists too increased and last year 51 such incidents were recorded in which several civilians were killed.Hence Pakistan needs to improve the infrastructure so that people could feel comfortable and were not forced to end their lives.
Pakistan has been rattled by prolonged terrorist related strife which had affected tourism, industrial and agriculture sectors thereby enhancing economic difficulties for the country. It is in this context that the establishment in Islamabad has sought financial help from the international donors, especially the united States,so that the level of economic crisis was reduced.(eom)
