| Groups of foreign mercenaries may infiltrate into Jammu Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Jammu,September 23 :-The US Government is likely to set up additional bases for its and NATO forces in Pakistan to prevent US forces from meeting a failure in Afghanistan.According to reports reaching here from across the border, the American President Barack Obama has not accepted the NATO commander, General Stanley Mcchrystal's suggestion that the strength of the US and NATO forces be increased to check increasing threats from the terrorists, especially the Al Qaeda activists and the Talibans. Instead the US authorities are said to be planning to press into service more drones and unmanned helicopter gunships which could pound the Al Qaeda and the Taliban bases not only on Pakistan-Afghan border but inside Afghanistan.Mcchrystal had conveyed to the US administration his fears that the American mission may be defeated if the strength of the NATO forces was not increased. His fears were based on the fighting powers of the Al Qaeda activists and the Talibans. But the US President and his advisers have a different perception. They believe that mere increase in the numerical strength of the NATO forces would not yield as much positive results as straffing of Al Qaeda bases in Afghanistan could yield. Also, over the years field reports received by the US Government revealed that direct encounters between the terrorists and the NATO forces would usually prove costly for the Government forces as the terrorists had advantage while fighting on the rugged terrain.Accordingly,Obama does not want his men to get killed while fighting terrorists. Therefore,he has preferred to provide aerial cover to the NATO forces which has been found more effective than ground strikes. This way the latest American plan was to provide all military assistance to the Pakistani forces in tackling the menace of terrorists in the country and in the neighbouring Afghanistan. Reports said that the American plan involves occupying more land strips in those belts of Pakistan which are adjacent to Afghan border and use them as bases for carrying out drone strikes on the terrorist bases in Afghanistan.According to these reports Obama is very keen to achieve some sembalance of success in his war against terror in Afghanistan and Pakistan so that he ordered pull out of the American and NATO forces from the land of mountains as early as possible. These reports said that if the American Government approved the plan of carrying out consistent drone attacks on the Talibans and terrorist bases in Pakistan and Afghanistan more groups of militants, besides foreign mercenaries, would cross into Jammu and Kashmir.A senior police officer, posted in Srinagar, today said that following repeated ground and air strikes against the Talibans and terrorists of different hues in Pakistan and Afghanistan sever al groups of militants had crossed into Jammu and Kashmir during the last five months. The police officer said that in the recent encounters between the security forces and the militants in different parts of the state, especially in the Kashmir valley, the slain militants were found to be citizens of Pakistan. These pakistani militants have, according to the officer, sneaked into Kashmir during those months of public protests and rallies, engineered by separatists, for the purpose of giving teeth to the ongoing subversive activities. He said that events in Kashmir during the last five months indicated that agencies were active in Pakistan which assisted groups of militants in crossing into Jammu and Kashmir and in providing weapons and ammunition to these rebels. This programme was not fully known to the establishment in Islamabad which has been harping on the resumption of the composite dialogue. It is believed that these agencies wanted to promote conflict between India and Pakistan which ultimately could destabilise Zardari led Government in Islamabad. Now that the two foreign ministers are to meet in New York on the sideslines of the UN General Assembly session it was hoped that the two sides could take a step forward so that the current level of mistrust and tension between the two sides got diluted.
