Early Times Report
Jammu, Sep 24: Hundreds of students today boycotted their classes and took out a protest demonstration as part of their ongoing two-month long agitation here, demanding establishment of Central University in this winter capital.
Students boycotted their routine class work and took to the streets amid anti-government slogans demanding setting up of Central University at the identified land in Samba district.
A large number of students led by the leaders of various student organisations assembled at Government Gandhi Memorial Science College and demonstrated against the government for lingering the Central University issue.
''Over two-months have passed and government has not yet come out with any solution to solve the Central University issue, which is already sanctioned by the Government of India for Jammu,'' a student leader said.
The vehicular movement, however, remained disrupted in various parts of the city due to the protests while heavy deployment of police was also made outside the educational institutions, including the Jammu University to avoid any untoward incident.
Students under the banner of Central University Andolan Samiti (CUAS), an amalgam of various student, social and non-political organisations are protesting for the last two months demanding establishment of Central University sanctioned by the Central Government to Jammu
Meanwhile State BJP General Secretary Shamsher Singh Manhas has asked the party activists to ensure their participation in every program to be undertaken by the Central University Andolan Samiti (CUAS) for getting the sanctioned CU established in Jammu region and oppose any such move which is aimed at shifting it to Srinagar from Jammu.
Addressing meeting of office bearers and prominent activists of Gandhi Nagar and Satwari Mandals falling in Gandhi Nagar constituency he exhorted them not to get misled by the hollow assurances of the Congress ministers that they are for setting up of two universities--one in Jammu and other in Kashmir. He said these ministers are playing into the hands of the Kashmiri leaders and compromising on the interests of Jammu for the sake of power only. These Congressmen do not have any concern for the Jammu and Jammuites, he alleged.
The BJP leader asked the party activists to reach out the masses and expose the double standards of the Congress ministers. He accused the administration of harassing the college and university students of Jammu region by using police force. He said the government can not suppress the voice of the masses and it should concentrate on establishing the Central University in Jammu as soon as possible failing which it may have to face the public wrath.
