| Gaddafi puts J&K under UN focus | | | ABID SHAH | 9/25/2009 12:42:57 AM |
| New Delhi, Sept 24: The Libyan googly over Kashmir at the United Nations General Assembly may not cut ice with most member nations yet India cannot escape from the applause that this may kick off in the Valley as also across the borders. And as for an era that has progressed from yesteryears’ cold war to only cold peace, Muammar Gaddafi, is obviously a new player who has been trying to come to terms with changed geopolitical and diplomatic landscape. He does believe in front foot batting where attention went to him for his insistence to stay in a tent during his US visit, his unusually long speech at the General Assembly and his dubbing the UN Security Council as a ‘terrorist body’. Each of these things cannot but confound diplomacy and give hard times to those, including Indians, who believe in caution and playing it too safe. The reason for this largely is that unlike leaders like Gaddafi diplomats back home have mainly been dealing with a unipolar world with their sight on other’s strength alone instead of setting right terms in return of collaboration extended by them to today’s lone centre of power. Not too long ago the West had to set free, the Libyan convict, Abdul Basset Ali Megrahi, who was sentenced for a term that could go beyond his life for Lockerbie bombing of an American civilian aircraft killing 270 people on board. The British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, could not avoid the harsh fact that this was because of the oil that Libya does have abundantly. Similarly, Gaddafi has been seeking US concessions through posing as a peace nick and giving assurances about winding up his defence programmes. Through the years of cold war it preferred more aggressive posturing vis-à-vis America and the West. And after it Tripoli has clearly opted to be a dealer and customer that US often likes to woo. Thus, Gaddafi served a lesson on Wednesday through his antics against weak and meek politics and diplomacy practiced by most third world countries. This is bound to be criticised in New Delhi besides other world capitals. Yet his astuteness would linger well after the Session is over. As for the moment this has tried to take the focus to Kashmir among other things. And, thus, this puts spotlight on Indian and Pakistani delegations led by their foreign ministers whose interaction with each other could commence at New York any moment now.
