| Top HM ultra among 2 killed | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sep 24: Police and security forces today claimed to have killed two of the senior most commanders of Hizbul Mujahideen’s Pir Panjal Regiment (PPR) in a fierce gunbattle in the mountains between Gulabgarh and Kulgam in south Kashmir. Informed sources told Early Times that troops of Rashtriya Rifles 9th Bn and Kulgam Police launched a massive search operation late last evening after learning about the presence of some top wanted commanders of Hizbul Mujahideen’s PPR on Thanda Katha mountain ridge between Gulabgarh and Kulgam. Working on the specific information, troops zeroed in on the militant hideout in the wee hours and issued to them a command of surrender. Rather than coming out and laying down arms, two of the heavily armed militants opened gunfire and attempted to escape. Both of them were killed in a three-hour-long gunfight. Officials identified them as Manzoor Ahmed alias Sadam of Yadrish, Mahore, district Reasi and Bashir Ahmed alias Saifullah of the same area. According to official sources, Sadam was a top wanted militant, holding the rank of “Divisional Commander” Chinab in Hizbul Mujahideen’s PPR while as his associate was also wanted in several attacks on security forces and civilian killings. Sources said that two AK-47 rifles and a quantity of other arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of the encounter. A solar mobile phone charger seized at the spot indicated that the militants had been effectively operating their telecommunications system with the help of solar batteries. Sources said that call records of the militants’ mobile phones and a seized wireless set was being scanned to identify other persons associated with the militant out and their locations. Official claimed that Sadam’s death in the gunbattle was a major setback for PPR as he was a dreaded militant who was believed to be involved in a number of subversive acts including causing harassment to womenfolk in the Gujjar community across Pirpanjal mountains. They claimed that none of the soldiers or Police personnel suffered any damage in the gunbattle. Killing of the two militants last night came after a day of two gunbattles in Kashmir valley in which four soldiers, including a Major, and equal number of militants had got killed.
