‘Baba- Jitto’ play attract large crowd

The holy town of Katra witnessed the enthralling performance of the proud production of Dogras “ Baba Jitto” directed by Balwant Thakur in connection with the on going Navratra Festival organized by Tourism Department in collaboration with shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Based on a 15th century folk tale, the play has been scripted by Prof. Ram Nath Shastri.
Introducing the play to the audience, Natrang director, Balwant Thakur said that it was his and Natrang’s long cherished dream to stage this play in Katara during Navratras. But it looks twenty years to realize this dream; he expressed his gratitude to the Tourism Department and the Shrine Board for making this historic occasion a possibility. He further said that Natrang’s plays could play a major role to in boosting the cultural tourism in J&K and have all the ingredients, which offer a rich variety of our priceless heritage and rich cultural ethos. Thousands of the people who were gathered at the main venue of the Navratra festival re-lived the 600 years old super saga of sacrifice.
Today was perhaps the largest audience, which broke all-time records of the gathering at Navratra festival. At the moments the people were in tears, witnessing the tragic tale of Bawa Jitto. Though this play has been staged all over the country but for the artists it was an experience of the lifetime, who performed this play at the place, which is the village of Bawa Jitto. In the story, Bawa Jitto takes refuse to a nearby village Shamachak to escape from the harassment of his own relatives. Here with the help of on of his old friends he succeeds in getting a peace of barren land for cultivation on the condition that he will give oneforth of the produce to the landlord. With his hard efforts he turns the barren piece of land to a most fertile land. The greedy landlord decides to take away the whole produce and the hapless Jitto unable to endure injustice kills himself.
The most celebrated actors of Jammu stage and television demonstrated the magic of their acting and kept every one spellbound.
Those who gave engrossing performances included; Arvind Anand as Bawa Jitto, Suresh Kumar as Mehta Beer Singh, Sanjeev Gupta as Isso, Mukulni Sethi as Jojan, Neeraj Kant as Rullo, Pankaj Sharma as Malli and Kamljeet Kaur as Jeuni. Others who put best of their efforts included; Dimple Sharma, Deepak Virdhi, Subhash Verma, Mohit Sharma, Pawan Verma, Mukta Passi, Sajara Qadir, Rohit Verma, Rakesh Gupta, Hemant Kumar, Pankush Verma, Ankush and Mayank, Girdhari Lal and Harbans Lal enthralled with their Karkan Singing. Suraj Ganjoo designed and executed the lights of the play.
