Sweet makers for rationalization of rates

Jammu, Sept 29: The halwai association has appealed to the authorities in the directorate of consumer affairs and public distribution system that while fixing the rates of sweets for diwali and the festival season, the exorbitant increase in the raw material and ingredients used in preparing sweets must be taken into consideration. The rates of different qualities of sweets should not be fixed arbitrarily and later the sweets sellers should not be unduly harassed.
In a press statement issued here today association in a meeting under the chairmanship of its president Nek Ram Sharma, SS Arora general secretary said that the rate of sugar has risen by 80% as compared to last year, Desi Ghee rate has risen by over 50%, Khoya has become costlier by 30%, milk rates too have risen much higher, beside other ingredients used in producing sweets.
Arora has said that manufacturers and sellers of sweets are taking utmost care to maintain the high standard of their product and ensure that there is no adulteration with any mall content in the products as well as see that these do not become stale, unhygienic and unfit for human consumption. But unfortunately the concerned authorities take sedative pleasure in harassing the halwais, particularly during the festival season every year. The checking squad constituted by the district development commission, comprising representatives from various departments and enforcing agencies conducts raids on the shops, and harass the shopkeepers, publically insult them only to take credit and cheap publicity in the media. He emphasizing that the dignity of the honest and scrupulous sweet sellers must be honoured and maintained and they should not be harassed unnecessarily.
Nek Ram Sharma in the meeting assured the concerned authorities as well as the pubic in general and the buyers of sweets in particular that the association will take adequate steps on their part to see that no sweet sellers resorts of any underhand means to earn extra profit.
