| Telecom services must improve | | | Almost eight to ten years later than rest of the country when cellphones made their in Jammu and Kashmir, when had expected the whole change on social and economic profile of the state. Companies arriving one after the other did really make some change but it seems to be short-lived and now frustrating. Within a short span of time the expectations diluted with the authorities exhibiting callousness in dealing with the customers’ problems. The technical snags woke up to defeat the very cause of knitting the state on air. Those who got their SIM cards started loathing them immediately as the erratic service provided by companied became cause of headache rather than a panacea to the pain of distance. The problem persisted for some time as BSNL was the sole agency to operate the mobile services in the state. The authorities turned more and more arrogant with every passing day. Customers cried hoarse but they remained insensitive to their needs and defeated the veracity of their claims to bring people together. The let was expected when AirTel, Aircel announced to spread their facilities to the state. Disillusioned with one company the inhabitants of the state went to give new arrival a try and then several entrants in the area were given chances. However, barring the early few months, these expectations also fell flat when it comes to connecting people perfectly. There are large regions in the state that remain not reachable even today. Adding salt to the injuries has been the discourtesy between the number of mobile service providers that claim to connect people while as these two agencies are yet to comply to facilitate easy access to each others’ customers. One being a corporation ought to be very professional, but unfortunately they fallen quite short of it. Almost half of the state is inaccessible from a mobile phone due to the paucity of towers or other technical hiccups. The enthusiasm its mobile service triggered among the inhabitants of Jammu and Kashmir has almost died down. People have no alternative but to choose between three of them which has limited the chances of a healthy competition. In this non existence of a sharp competition, customer is the ultimate sufferer who pays only to collect heartache once his/her cell phone refuses to comply with punches. Adding to the discomfort of customers, the BSNL authorities issued WLL or the fixed line wireless phones which have become a nuisance to the majority of its users. Unlike landline phones, the fixed line wireless sets too have the problem of ‘not reachable’ which makes it the latest version of the erratic mobile service. It has miserably failed in the rural areas of the state where only landline connections would prove better means of communication. But unmindful of the needs of the people, the concerned authorities seem to be interested in counting the connections irrespective of their utility to meet the cause they are being installed for. It baffles one that when other states of India are closely knit by a net of mobile service agencies, Jammu and Kashmir is being ignored by BSNL bosses for no genuine reason. The need of the hour is to take the matter seriously and ensure smooth communication all over the state without signal and other technical problems.
