| Eliminating militants, plugging infiltration top priorities: Jaswal | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 30: As he moves out of Shimla to take over the reins of Indian Army’s most strategic and challenging Command, the Northern Command headquartered at Udhampur, Lt Gen BS Jaswal has outlined eliminating militants and checking infiltrations from Pakistan and its occupied Kashmir into Jammu and Kashmir as his top most priority. Until now the Chief of Shimla based Army Training Command (ARTRAC), Lt Gen BS Jaswal will be taking over as new Army Commander in Northern Command at Udhampur on Thursday. Before leaving ARTRAC for his new assignment at Udhampur, Jaswal told reporters at Shimla that creation of conducive atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir would be at the top on his agenda. Replying to a query, Gen Jaswal said no doubt territorial integrity is his topmost priority, but he has also to curtail the infiltrations across Indo-Pak borders. About insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir, he said the situation demanded creation of conducive atmosphere for the state government. He said as a General-Officer Commanding-in-chief, Army, he would have to create a synergy with bureaucrats, paramilitary forces, police and local administrations to create healthy atmosphere in the Kashmir Valley. 'Eliminating militants, checking infiltration across the border, boosting the morale of the troops and creating conducive environment for the Jammu and Kashmir government would be my top priorities,' Gen Jaswal said. He said special operations would be launched in Jammu and Kashmir to flush out the militants. 'Special operations would be carried out to eliminate all the surviving militants hiding in remote areas,' he said. 'Steps would be taken to keep the morale of the troops high and maintain their battle worthiness.' On killing of a Lashkar-a-Taiba militant by an 18-year-old Kashmiri girl Saturday night in Rajouri district, he said: 'It's a classical case of bravery. A number of village defence committees have been set up in Kashmir. The resolve is to take on the militants. It's a good initiative.' On Chinese intrusion into Indian territory, he said certain stretches along the border have not been demarcated. But 'we are prepared to take on any challenge', he said. He said that being Chief of Northern Command, he would have to reenergise village defence committees in the terrorist affected area of Jammu and Kashmir. Recent instance of Rajouri where a woman killed a terrorist, shows that people are ready to head-on the terrorists, and the woman's bravery was unprecedented, he added. He did not entertain questions about recent rumors and threat perception of war with China and transgression by Chinese troupe into Indian territory. Mr Jaswal, however, said the army is well prepared to take on any challenge but observed that there is nothing new on Indo-China border and such incidents have been always there in the past which were mostly at un-demarcated disputed land. He said Army is fully prepared for any eventuality and having regular surveillance on its borders. He said there is nothing to be worried about as Indian Army is well trained, equipped with modern weaponry system and had very well technological warfare equipment.
