10/1/2009 10:31:09 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 1- Going ahead with its campaign of making its self rule document public, Peoples Democratic Party today held one day workshop on the self rule formula at party headquarters.
The workshop titled “Is Self Rule Way Forward to the Resolution of Jammu and Kashmir Problem” was part of the party’s awareness campaign about its political, economic and developmental agenda.
Representatives of civil society including intellectuals, academicians, professionals, prominent citizens and the youth participated and discussed the pros and cons of self rule in the context of the final resolution of Kashmir issue.
The day long workshop was inaugurated by party’s youth president Bashir Assad and presided over by the party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
Addressing the workshop Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said self rule formula was grounded in the contemporary realities of the sub continent but takes into account the historical context of the problem without getting bogged down by the decade’s old baggage of hatred, wars, violence, political deceit and un- kept promises. “We will have to cut through the frozen mindsets to lead our state out of the miseries without compromising our dignity, self respect or economic interests”, he said.
Mufti said Self Rule could to a large extent neutralize the negative fall out of partition that had cost the state heavy in terms of emotional, political, social and economic problems. While it would effectively remove the sense of siege that had gripped the state post 1947 it would also lead to a virtual reunion of the two sides separated by LOC, he added.
Showing concern on the internal condition of Pakistan, Sayeed said that the condition in India, Pakistan and in sub-continent at large can be stable only by resolving the Kashmir issue. He hoped the situation between the two neighbouring countries improves for larger good of people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“For us friendship between Indian and Pakistan is mandatory. I request government of India to carry forward the reconciliation process started by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee to its logical conclusion,” Sayeed said, adding that peace process started by Vajpayee is irreversible.
Expressing his anxiety over the current downslide in Indo Pak relations Mufti said the two countries will have to accede to the aspirations of the people of the state and added that ‘stable Pakistan was in our interest’.
Mufti also replied to questions from the audience in a lively question- answer session through which the participants expressed keen interest in various dimensions of Kashmir problem and its resolution. He said without in any way impinging on the sovereignty of either India or Pakistan the self rule would result in reuniting the two parts of the state.
PDP Srinagar District President Mohammad Ashraf Mir and general secretaries of party’s youth wing Showket Gayoor and Nazir Ahmad Ittoo were also present.
