| Vohra for annual calendar on Gandhian activities | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 2 – The Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra, has called for formulating a comprehensive yearlong calendar of activities for securing a sustained flow of varied activities for promotion of Gandhian values for the achievement of peace and prosperity through communal harmony, brotherhood, amity and tolerance. The Governor was interacting with a delegation of the Gandhian Workers’ Foundation (GWF) and Gandhian Global Family, who called on him at Raj Bhavan here today, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. The Governor emphasized the need for organizing seminars, debates, essay, quiz, dance, drama, music and painting competitions on various aspects of the Gandhiji’s life and teachings, especially in the educational institutions across the State, to create greater awareness among the young generation about the Mahatma’s philosophy of truth, tolerance and non-violence. He said that such activities, throughout the year, would sustain the impact of the teachings of the Father of Nation among the youth. Recalling his own association with the Sarvodaya International Trust (SIT), (Delhi Branch), with which he had been involved with many years, the Governor shared his experiences with the delegation of the Gandhian Workers’ Federation and Gandhian Global Family, regarding the activities carried out by the SIT to propagate Gandhian values and thought.The Governor appreciated the initiative taken by the Foundation for creating awareness among the people at large about the teachings of the Mahatma. The Governor, who is also the Chairman of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, announced that 500 blankets would be provided by the Board to the Foundation for distribution among the orphans, widows, destitute and needy persons and assured the delegation of all possible support for their activities. Earlier, the delegation led by the Chief Advisor of the Foundation and Director Information, Khawaja Farooq Ahmad Renzu, apprised the Governor about the activities of the Gandhian Workers’ Foundation and Gandhian Global Family, particularly in the Kashmir Valley, to strengthen communal harmony, brotherhood, amity and secular traditions for which the State has been known for centuries. Renzu also gave details of the various functions being organized by the Foundation across the State on Gandhi Jayanti and the future action plan of the Foundation to promote the Gandhian values. He said that, today, the Foundation has organized significant programmes at Baramulla, Anantnag, Pulwama, Budgam, Ganderbal, Srinagar and other places in the Valley to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti. Recalling that the Sufis and Saints have all along preached mutual brotherhood and tolerance, Mr. Renzu and the delegation presented to the Governor the copy of a 75-year old historical photograph of Gandhiji with various national leaders of that time. The Governor evinced keen interest in the photograph and said that it would be suitably displayed.
