Triangular contest, as JCCI goes to polls after 10 years

Jammu, Oct 2: It is a clearly triangular contest between two well tried titans and a new entrant as the Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industries goes to polls later this month after a long gap of ten years.
Though the deceased President of the Chamber Ram Sahai held office for too long due prolonged legal reference, constitutions amendments and other reasons but had cleared the decks for elections well before he took the extreme step of ending his life. Sahai, it is learnt, had obtained clearance from the Court and it was through an SMS that he conveyed to all the members about possibility elections in ending October.
The election process for the prestigious chamber seats is currently in full swing. 24 candidates are in fray for different posts of the Chamber office and the Electoral College is of 1508 members. After the last date of filing nomination papers, three candidates are in fray for the post of president, seven for senior vice president, four for vice president, two for secretary general, three for secretary, and five for treasurer. Polling is being held on October 28 at Chamber office and results are expected the same evening.
Two former Presidents of the Jammu Chamber, Romesh Gupta and YV Sharma are in fray while third contestant for the post of President is Rakesh Gupta, who heads association of pharmaceutical traders.
YV Sharma was Ram Sahai’s challenger in 1999 when he lost to the former by a narrow margin of 12 votes. He has remained President of the Chamber earlier in 1990s. Romesh Gupta, another aspirant for the post of president, who remained president twice, once from year 1998-1990 and next time from year 1997 to 1999.
The area wise vote breakup is: Poonch 10, Rajouri 2, Akhnoor 12, Kathua 12, Samba 25, Bari-Brahmana 33, Gangyal 96, Digiana 17, Ware House 197, Kanak Mandi 195, Raghunath Bazar 97, Old Hospital 52, Shalamar Road 28, Rajinder Bazar 22, Residency Road and G.S.S. Road 28, Hari Market, Lower Gumat and Karan Market 52, Fruit Mandi 37, Sabzi Mandi 22, Transport Nagar 74, Gandhi Nagar 100, Udhampur 6 and other.
Ram Sahai was elected the last President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 16th Jan, 2000 and the term for the post was for two years. Due to the stay in court and other reasons, he remained in the office for 10 years uninterrupted. Though, in the year 2003, process of elections in CCI, started but got delayed and again in the year 2005, another initiative was taken to hold elections, but didn’t get matured, said Om Prakash Gupta, the acting president of CCI, an close associate of Ram Sahai, who worked as Senior Vice President (CCI) during his tenure.
