| ASCOMS organizes blood donation camp | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 3: To commemorate October Ist as national voluntary blood donation day, Acharya Sri Chander College of medical science and hospital at Sidhra organized a voluntary blood donation camp here today. During the camp doctors, students, paramedical staff of ASCOMS donated blood, besides other social organizations. Speaking on the occasion Prof and head blood bank said that for the population of 1.2 billion, estimated requirement of blood in the country is 12 million units annually while the present annual collection of blood is 8.5 million units. Thus there is a shortage of 3.5 million units inspite of 2607 blood banks functioning in 35 states and union territories. She said to bridge the gap between demand and supply promotion of voluntary blood donation and separation of blood units into various components is the only solution. Out come of shortage of blood units results in malpractice, denial of access of blood to needy patients, infact nearly one third of all maternal deaths in the country are on account of non availability of blood. Consultant Dr. Urmil Verma, Dr. Bhawna Raina, Dr Poonam Sharma, Dr. Mala, Dr. Farahna actively participated in the camp. Earlier the camp was inaugurated by director Dr. SS Sodan.
