| Tone up historic town : Mufti to Govt | | | Early Times Report Srinagar Oct 3: Peoples Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has called for a total revitalization plan for the major historic towns like Anantnag, Baramulla and Sopore. During his day long visit of his constituency in South Kashmir Mufti regretted the measures initiated by the previous coalition governments had been denied the focus and attention that was needed to complete them in time. Mufti said the city of Srinagar along with towns like Anantnag, Baramulla, Sopore and some other urban centres represented a distinct cultural mosaic which needed to be preserved by providing modern civic amenities without disturbing their traditional character. He said the initiatives made by his government needed to be carried forward as funds were no more a problem with Government of India’s open ended JNURM taking care of all requirements. Referring to the projects started in Anantnag town by his government Mufti said the establishment of a university campus, a three hundred bedded hospital and a major shopping centre was aimed at an integrated development of the area. He visited these projects for a first hand review of the progress of construction. Urging the union government to speedily implement the four laning plan of the National Highway Mufti said the project had been put on a backburner after 2006 which meant problems for a large population living along the Srinagar Jammu link. He said lack of follow up from the state government was one reason for delaying the project beyond the two by passes in Jammu and Srinagar and Jammu Lakhanpur section. Mufti said while the highway should be upgraded to most modern standards for obvious reasons it was necessary to provide a fly over at the busy Khannabal intersection. He reviewed the Rs 46 crore water supply augmentation scheme and desired the work to be started soon. This scheme he said would provide a long term solution to the water woes of Anantnag town which in spite of being home to a number of water sources had been deficient in potable water. During his visit to the South Kashmir campus of the University of Kashmir Mufti said more and more streams should be added to cater to the growing needs of the students. He said the faculty at the campus needed to be strengthened and job oriented courses introduced. At the Hospital site Mufti was informed that only Rs 7 crores had been allocated for construction of the prestigious medical facility against a projected requirement of Rs 58 crores this year. He expressed hope that the government would substantially increase the allocation for the current year. The shopping complex at the Bus stand too suffers from lack of funding, mufti was told on the site. Stressing the importance of its early completion Mufti said it could provide a major boost to the town’s business and should be provided enough funds for early completion. Mufti was presented a large number of petitions during his visit by the locals who reflected developmental requirements. At every place he was received warmly by a large number of enthusiastic people. He was accompanied by the district president of the party Peerzada Mohammad Hussein and Advocate Javed Ahmed.
