When in power politicians support "Azad" kashmir’s accession with Pakistan
7/21/2006 7:23:20 PM
Srinagar:-One thing common among politicians in Jammu Kashmir and Pakistan administered Kashmir is when in power for rulers in Kashmir the state’s accession with India is final.and the rulers in "Azad" Kashmir treat its accession with Pakistan irreversible.
This was amply displayed when the leaders of the Muslim Conference, which was voted to power in recent Assembly poll in Muzaffarabad, dwelt at length on the benefits of Azad Kashmir’s accession with Pakistan. These leaders, including Sardar Abdul Qayoom Khan, his son,Sardar Atique Mohd.Khan, designated Prime Minister, and Sardar Sikender Hayat Khan, were in the forefront of the celebrations of the state’s accession with Pakistan in Muzaffarabad on Wednesday.

These leaders explained that their state could not have survived without having acceded to Pakistan. They said that it was Islamabad that took care of the security, economy, political stability in the state.

And the same leaders had been, from time to time in the past, critical of Pakistan establishment accusing it of having muzzled political freedom in "Azad" Kashmir. They did it when they had lost power. Leaders in Pakistan administered Kashmir have now realized that even if a particular political party gets the mandate of the voters it will be allowed to form the Government only if Islamabad and Pakistani Army gave a green signal.

No doubt the Muslim Conference won a simple majority in the 49-member Assembly its leader,Sardar Mohd.Atique Khan, had to wait for a couple of days for staking claim for forming the Government because nod from Pakistani Army and President Parvez Musharraf was needed. As a thanks giving the Muslim Conference leaders celebrated the accession day with fervour in order to convey to Gen. Parvez Musharraf that "we are with you."

Against this those seeking independence observed the accession day as a black day.In the forefront were leaders of the JKLF,Stundent’s Liberation Front,People United Party and other pro-Azadi groups. The Amanullah Khan led JKLF workers and leaders staged demonstrations against the accession of the state with Pakistan.Wearing black badges and carrying black flags leaders and supporters of independence took out processions demanding "azadi."

The JKLF and others had a grouse because in the recent Assembly poll the nomination papers of their candidates were rejected on the plea that they had not filled and signed an affidavit supporting state’s accession with Pakistan.
The scene has not been dissimilar in the Kashmir valley. Between 1953 and 1974 Sheikh Abdullah, the tallest political figure in the state, had questioned state’s accession with India. He used to stated that the accession was not final. And when under the Sheikh-Indira accord he regained power after 22 years he would explain that he had never questioned state’s accession with India. But he had questioned the quantum of accession.

Even today’s separatists had campaigned in favour of their candidates in the Assembly elections in the valley. And their candidates had affirmed their loyalty to the constitution of the state and that of India while filing their nomination papers. Some of them were elected to the Assembly.

Whether under pressure from agencies across the border or on account of their failure to ensure power for themselves these very political leaders turned separatists and have been shouting loud in favour of settling the Kashmir issue as per the wishes of the people of Kashmir. The prominent hardliner in the separatist camp.Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who remained a member of the Assembly for several years,is still drawing pension and has already availed of the house and car loan facilities entitled to an MLA.
