India wakes up to Pak OIC ploy
10/4/2009 12:09:33 AM

ABID SHAH
New Delhi, October 3: India has finally woken up to the Pakistani move to whip up the issue of Kashmir through the aegis of Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).
The External Affairs Ministry spokesman, Vishnu Prakash, rejected here today an OIC statement and questioned the locus standi of the grouping of Islamic countries after the OIC in the wake of its meeting at New York earlier this week called for realisation of “legitimate rights of self-determination in accordance with the relevant UN resolution and aspirations of Kashmiri people”.
The report also commented on the human rights situation in Kashmir, including murder of two women in mysterious circumstances in summer this year at Shopian in the Kashmir Valley. Taking exception to OIC statement, Mr Vishnu Prakash called it “regrettable that the OIC has commented on India’s internal affairs. We Condemn and reject this.”
He attributed the OIC’s latest stand on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir to as also action by it to complete inability to understand India’s position.
The spokesman asserted that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and, thus, has no locus standi in matters related to India’s internal affairs.
The OIC has 56 member countries that have been trying to raise issues related to them. It had never been as vociferous about Jammu and Kashmir as this time it turned out to be during the UN General Assembly meeting on whose sidelines foreign ministers of Pakistan and Turkey among others addressed what it calls to be its contact group on Kashmir.
The chairman of All-Party Hurriyat conference from Kashmir, Mirwaiz Maulvi Omar Farooq, to attended the contact group meeting that among other things also appointed an envoy on Kashmir. Early Times has already reported about these developments in its Thursday morning issue though Ministry of External Affairs took two days thereafter to question the move by the OIC.
