| His foot, crafting beauty, better than hundreds hands –that’s Uttam! | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 3: “My Foot”, this is what people usually say when mean that they don’t care. See Uttam’s work and you will burst in exclamation…“oh his foot”. It is Uttam foot doing beautifully when many cant do without their hands. Uttam’s is a story of one foot and many tales of courage, determination, will power and refusal to take things lying down as they come your way. His body has clearly visible disadvantages –his both hands and one leg is handicapped. But his will power is such a strong advantage that Uttam is a name to reckon with in his chosen field –the art world. At look at his gallery, where painting are now up for sale, clearly suggest that success is 99% hard-work, will and determination and may be 1 % luck. In a poor family of village Majouri in Udhampur, Uttam was born 60 per cent handicapped. It was a misfortune for his parents but after all they were Uttam’s parents and struggling on was something natural to them. “When my father took me to join the village school, many people asked why?”, recalls Uttam whose colours are an inspiration for many. “In school it was very difficult for me to carry on …with great difficulty I could hold pencil with my hands and support by my legs. I didn’t have strength in my hands. I used to put support with my leg. When ever I get free time I used to practice writing”. “In Class III my teacher encouraged me in drawing screens and that was my first painting”, says Uttam. He did not get much encouragement from family as painting is still not being seen as career booster but Uttam’s will and his teacher’s guidance showed the way. “My will power was becoming strong. When I saw people doing different kinds of work the voice come from my inner heart that why can’t I work like them”. After passing my Class 10 exam Uttam had improved in his artistic work. In the 1996 he passed the Higher Secondary exam. “That was my greatest achievement and then I started taking part in the Creative People’s meet cum Exhibition and got many awards, people started recognizing my work”. Today, Uttam’s gallery not only has breathtakingly beautiful paintings but also a long list of awards and certificates. Catching up with the pace of modern world, Uttam has come up with a website: www.durgaart.com He has featured all his paintings at the websites and invited interests from the buyers. Hats off to Uttam!
