Ambphalla jail-mates are skilled artisans also

Srinagar, Oct 4 : Far from assault weapons, the inmates at Amphala district jail in Jammu are now working with needles and other instruments of craft making embroidery and varieties of candles.
And their work was put on display at the Police-Public mela AT Srinagar today.
''All the embroidery work on the products displayed at the stall set up during Police-Public mela here has been done by the inmates of my jail,'' Superintendent of Amphala Jail Rajni Sehgal said.
The jail houses 650 inmates, including foreigners, locals from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir and other states.
''We have 34 women prisoners,'' she said, adding that some inmates are facing life term.
The jail authorities had started a programme under to help inmates gain some sort of technical know-how or learn some skills to enable them earn their livelihood without depending upon others when freed.
''We are making a sincere effort to reform them within the jail so that they could lead a peaceful and honourable life after their release,'' Ms Sehgal said.
Citing an example, she said Yasir Mohammad, a resident of Bangladesh and a local Ajit Singh, facing life term now heads candle and needle work sections respectively.
She said when Ajit came in jail, he was knowing nothing.
With the hardwork put together by the jail officials and other inmates, he mastered candle making. Today he is teaching other inmates the craft of making candles.
