| Chib inaugurates singing, instrumental competition | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 4: Minister for Medical and Technical Education, Mr. R. S. Chib inaugurated a singing and instrumental competition at Abhinav Theatre, here this morning. The function was organized in the memory of Late Pandit Uma Dutt Sharma father of Santoor Maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma by Nirvana Academy- a Cultural Club. In the competition, about 60 students under different age groups between 7 to 24 years old participated. Programme started with the performance of a fusion band ‘Saptak’ and after which the music competition started with the classical vocal category. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Chib said that the Nirvana Academy is playing pivotal role to promote classical and folk music among the youngsters by arranging music competition in the remote as well as far-off areas for promoting the culture heritage of the state. . Chib threw light on the life of Pandit Uma Dutt Sharma and said that Mr. Sharma was born in April 1900 and received tabla training and Pakhawaj from his Guru Sardar Harnam Singh. He said that Pandit Uma Dutt Sharma was one of the famous artists from Jammu who performed in vocal music from Lahore Music Station. Pandit Ji was also appointed as Music Supervisor in Radio Kashmir and introduced Santoor among the budding artists of the state. He said that Pandit Ji and his son Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma have immense contribution in promoting Santoor Vadan and have created a niche in the world by their performance and devotion towards this art.
