| Sham suggest farmers to take cash crops | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 4: Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma has said that horticulture being mainstay of the Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, Government is taking all necessary steps to give further boost to this sector. He said in Jammu region, there is great potential for this sector and all uncovered areas will be tapped in phased manner. The Minister was speaking at one-day Awareness Camp-cum-Farmers’ Meet organized by the Directorate of Horticulture, Jammu at Maralian in R.S.Pura today. Stressing on the need for holding frequent awareness camps to educate the farmers about the latest varieties of horticulture crops at block level, the Minister said that officers should put strenuous efforts to achieve the desired goals. He asked for strict implementation of all centrally sponsored schemes so that benefits of the schemes percolate down to the needy. Mr. Sharma said that Horticulture Technology Mission which was launched in the State during the year 2005 could not pick up the necessary pace as per its potential due to certain reasons, but now all decks have been cleared and project will be implemented in letter and spirit. This scheme has lot of incentives for the farmers. He asked the farmers to avail benefits available under this Mission. Asking the farmers to lay stress on the cultivation of medicinal plants which are in great demand in the market, the Minister said that government is providing handsome incentives to the farmers under the National Mission on Medicinal Plants. He said in Kandi belt the medicinal plants have maximum survival rate and farmers must take benefits of the scheme. To overcome the problem of irrigation, he asked the farmers to adopt the cluster approach and government will also provide facilities of Deep Bore Well. He announced establishment of a Medicinal Plants Nursery at Bhor Camp area in Jammu to meet the requirements of the farmers. He said that nursery will be developed in a big way to cater the need of the entire Jammu region.
