| Scope for oil in Rajouri , Poonch | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 5-Continued militancy related incidents are said to have forced the ONGC to suspend determining the oil resources in Poonch-Rajouri belt, especially in Bhimber Gali area. Hitherto Jammu and Kashmir has been given a raw deal by the ONGC as far as oil exploration program was concerned. The ONGC had carried out surveys in Surinsar and Mansar areas in mid 70's which were later resumed in early 80's but the Commission abandoned the work after the survey revealed that there was no oil deposits. However, experts are of the opinion that except for Poonch-Rajouri belt there are no other areas where one can find oil deposits. Official sources said that the ONGC would have sent its team to Poonch-Rajouri area for exploration but the ongoing militancy related violence has kept the team away. Experts say that once the ONGC starts exploration work, rich oil reserves would be found and once oil extraction work was initiated it would convert the backward border belt into a prosperous area. Vice Chairman Panthers Party, Harsh Dev Singh, today said that the state Government should take up the matter of exploration of oil fields in Poonch-Rajouri area with the ONGC and the Union Ministry of Petroleum. He said the Centre must persuade the ONGC team to start exploration work and for that the state Government needed to provide adequate security cover to the ONGC team. Harsh Dev said when oil was being extracted in PoK why ONGC was not initiating measures for oil exploration and extraction in Rajouri and Poonch belts. He said that the entire state was rich in mineral wealth but no step has been taken for optimum extraction of valuable minerals.Referring to Rajouri, Harsh Dev said that the district had rich mineral wealth including that of coal, limestone, bauxite, iron ore and Bentonite but hitherto scientific method of extraction has not been introduced. He said if the Government was able to exploit mineral wealth in the state there would be no need for going to Delhi with a begging bowl.
